Ugly - 2NE1 [2NE1 The Second Mini Album]

The good:

There’s an incredible blend of styles in this song - it starts off soft and acoustic then adds sprinkles of techy, dance rhythms, eventually culminating in an edgy, rocking chorus. Admittedly, I wasn’t always a fan of 2NE1’s vocals, but they’ve really grown on me and now I find it oddly addictive. My favourite part of the song is definitely the bridge; Dara’s voice was totally made to sing this part, and in terms of the lyrics and the context of the song (more on this later), it’s possibly the most emotionally packed section and just feels right.

The bad:

The only problem I have with this song is located in the chorus; namely, the pronunciation. I try not to be too harsh with non-native English speakers but CL’s pronunciation is perfect in all other aspects, she just has a peculiar hatred for the vowel “i:”. The entire rhyme scheme is based on this hatred: “uglay”, “love may”, “preetay”. I’m almost certain she does this purposefully and not out of inability because she uses it in “preetay”, just not in the right place. Torturing the English language is not a trend I would like to see K-pop follow, although I think it’s already too late … somebody hold me.

The Verdict:

Lyrics: 7.5/10

I’m torn between “This is a terrible idea to present to teenage girls” and “Oh come on, name one person who hasn’t felt exactly like this at one point in their life”. For me, the lyrics bring up a combination of disapproval and empathy. The English is grammatically flawless though, so hats off to that.

Vocals: 8.5/10

I used to find 2NE1 rather piercing and nasally but once I moved past that, I realised that they can actually sing. And they’re a female idol band. Isn’t that amazing? (Yes, I am sexist toward my own sex, /shrugs.)

Arrangement: 9/10

Very nicely done. I especially love the soft piano mixed with bubbly, dance-y synth noises. Like when you add ice-cream to a fizzy drink and it comes out all frothy and awesome.
